You can use METAR abbreviations in the comments section to abbreviate your comments when possible. This not only shortens the amount of space needed, but keeps a uniformity within the section. However, please do not use METAR to report information that is already found in the standard columns, such as temperature or wind speed. This is not a requirement, however.
The most commonly used abbreviations follow:
Temperatures: 1SHHH = High temperature / low temperature in past 6 hours S = Sign (0 = Positive, 1 = Negative) Ex: 10232 = High of 23.2 C 2SLLL = Low temp in tenths degrees Celsius S = Sign (0 = Positive, 1 = Negative) Ex: 21100 = Low of -10.0 C Precipitation: RABXX - Rain began at XX past the hour. RAEXX - Rain ended at XX past the hour. SNBXX - Snow began at XX past the hour, etc. Ex: RAB12E17SNB17E33 = Rain began at :12, ended at :17. Snow began at :17, ended at :33. 4/SSS = Snow on ground. Ex: 4/002 = 2" on ground. 6PPPP = Total melted precipitation (rain and/or melted snow) during past 6 hours. Ex: 60123 = 1.23" of precipitation in past 6 hours. SNINCR NN/GG = Snow increased in past hour/on ground. Ex: SNINCR 02/12 = 2" in past hour with 12" on ground. Pressure: PRESRR = Pressure rising rapidly PRESFR = Pressure falling rapidly Wind: WSHFT HHMM = Wind shift occurred at HH:MM where HH = Hour, MM = Minute PKWND DDDSS/HHMM = Peak wind gust occurred at HH:MM from DDD at SS knots. Ex: PKWND 12043/2202 = 43 knots from 120 deg at 22:02UTC Degree to direction conversions: N 360 ENE 060 SE 135 SSW 210 W 270 NNE 030 E 090 SSE 150 SW 225 WNW 300 NE 045 ESE 120 S 180 WSW 240 NW 315 NNW 330
